Colosseum Tickets 2027: Don’t Repeat Our Queue Mistake

Do not make the same mistake at the Colosseum that we did. I went to Rome without enough preparation and left our Colosseum tickets until the last minute. Of course, nothing useful was available online by then. We had to join a very long queue for the remaining tickets at the entrance and lost time that we could have spent exploring Rome.

If you are reading this at the last minute, first check the remaining Colosseum tours and tickets here.

💡 Tip: For the rest of your trip, use my 3-day Rome itinerary. It includes the route we followed and the booking mistakes I would avoid next time.

Also useful: compare Rome airports and choose where to stay in Rome before you book.

Which Colosseum ticket should you buy?

The confusing part is that there is no single ticket covering every area. Decide whether you want only the normal Colosseum route, the arena floor, the underground levels or the attic before you buy.

TicketWhat it includesValidityMy verdict
24h Colosseum, Roman Forum and PalatineFirst and second levels of the Colosseum, its museum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. No arena or underground.Booked Colosseum time, plus one Forum-Palatine visit within 24 hours before or after it. The Colosseum visit is limited to 75 minutes. The cheapest and simplest choice for a first visit. Official adult price is currently EUR 18.
24h Only ArenaOnly the arena floor for about 20 minutes, then Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. It does not include the normal upper route inside the Colosseum.Arena at the booked time, with the Forum-Palatine visit within 24 hours.Choose it only if standing on the arena matters more to you than seeing the normal Colosseum route. Official adult price is currently EUR 18.
Full Experience ArenaNormal Colosseum route, arena, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and the SUPER sites. Two consecutive days. The Colosseum visit is limited to 90 minutes. For me, this is the best compromise if you want more than the basic route. Official adult price is currently EUR 24.
Full Experience Underground and ArenaUnderground levels, arena, normal route, Forum, Palatine and SUPER sites. Two consecutive days. Underground access depends on the selected ticket or guided visit.Best for people who are especially interested in history. It has limited capacity and can sell out very quickly.
Full Experience AtticNormal route, third level and attic with the panoramic lift, Forum, Palatine and SUPER sites. No arena or underground. Two consecutive days.Choose it for the views. Capacity is very limited.

Even the basic ticket includes the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Do not miss them. They are not a small free extra, but a large archaeological area that deserves its own time.

Prices and access rules can change. Check the exact inclusions on the official ticket page before paying, especially for the underground, arena and attic.

How and when to buy official Colosseum tickets

The only official online ticket office is ticketing.colosseo.it. CoopCulture, which many older articles still mention, is no longer the official seller. Standard ticket sales with a compulsory Colosseum time slot open 30 days before the visit.

Recent travellers report that individual slots may appear through the day at the corresponding Rome time and disappear almost immediately. The official website confirms the 30-day sales window, but not every detail of the release pattern. I would check as soon as your date opens and not wait until the evening.

Some special products have different release windows. For example, the official Full Experience Arena ticket is currently released seven days ahead, while the Underground and Arena product is listed from 30 days ahead. Always open the exact product page instead of assuming that every ticket appears on the same day.

Buying on site: since 4 May 2026, ordinary 24-hour Colosseum, Forum and Palatine tickets sold on site are available exclusively from the ticket office at Piazza del Colosseo, subject to availability. Older advice telling you to buy this ticket from the Forum office is now out of date.

If the official tickets have sold out, compare a ticket with an audio-guide app, a guided Colosseum and Forum tour or a tour including the underground levels. These cost more because you are buying additional services, not the same EUR 18 official ticket.

If you prefer to keep your bookings in one place, download the English GetYourGuide app through this link. My code CESTUJZABABKU5 gives 5% off an eligible booking made only in that downloaded app.

Check every name and bring photo ID

Colosseum tickets are issued in the visitor’s name. Check every first name and surname before paying and bring the same person’s passport or national identity card. From visits dated 9 May 2026, a name can be changed only once and no later than midnight seven days before the visit, and only for the limited reasons listed in the official rules.

This is also where another of my Rome mistakes matters. My whole wallet and documents were stolen in Rome. I then had to spend time at the police station getting a report for the insurance company. Keep your ID secure around the crowded entrance, but do not leave it at the hotel because you need it with your named ticket.

What time should you visit the Colosseum?

I would start your day at the Colosseum. Your ticket has a fixed entry time and the official advice is to arrive about 15 minutes early. Do not rely on being admitted later: the current rules say you cannot enter at a different time from the one booked.

An early slot also gives you more time for the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill afterwards. I do not recommend a late-afternoon booking. During our visit, people were being moved out even before the displayed closing time, and in winter the archaeological park closes surprisingly early.

Colosseum opening hours in 2026 and early 2027

  • 29 March to 30 September 2026: 08:30 to 19:15, last admission at 18:15.
  • 1 to 24 October 2026: 08:30 to 18:30, last admission at 17:30.
  • 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027: 08:30 to 16:30, last admission at 15:30.

The Roman Forum-Palatine area opens at 09:00. The published schedule currently covers only the beginning of 2027. Check the official opening-hours page again when later 2027 dates are announced.

Night visits are seasonal. The 2026 programme included Tuesday and Thursday tours, but dates and availability can change or be suspended. Do not plan a 2027 evening visit until it appears on the official booking site.

Security, bags and prohibited items

Everyone passes through a security check. Do not bring large luggage, wheeled suitcases, large backpacks, glass bottles, knives, blades or other sharp objects. There is no general luggage room inside the Colosseum, so leave bags at your accommodation or arrange an external locker before your time slot.

I would take a small bag and a refillable plastic bottle. Rome has public drinking fountains, and travelling light makes the security check easier. Wear proper shoes too: the Forum and Palatine have uneven stones, slopes and ancient steps.

When is the Colosseum free?

Admission is normally free on the first Sunday of every month. The current official calendar also lists 25 April, 2 June and 4 November as free dates. Tickets are distributed in order of arrival and cannot be treated like a normal reserved time slot.

Personally, I would not rebuild my whole Rome itinerary around a free Sunday, especially in summer. The queues can be much worse than on an ordinary booked day. If the date naturally fits your trip, try it, but arrive very early and have a backup plan.

Colosseum tickets for children, young adults and disabled visitors

Visitors under 18 enter free, but they still need their own ticket and proof of age. EU citizens from 18 until the day of their 25th birthday currently pay EUR 2. Bring the relevant identity document or eligibility proof.

The official Colosseum pages currently give inconsistent general wording about whether every ordinary free ticket is booked online or collected at a ticket office. The practical rule is clear for limited-capacity products: Full Experience, Arena, Underground and Attic free places must be reserved. For a basic family visit, try to add the free child ticket during the official online purchase. If the system fails to include it, contact the official helpdesk rather than buying an unnecessary full-price tour ticket for the child.

A third-party guided tour may charge for children because the price includes the guide and other services, even though state admission itself is free. Always read the operator’s age rules before paying.

Official admission is also free for eligible disabled visitors and, where applicable, one accompanying person. Bring documentation and check the current procedure on the official free-admission page.

Children enter free, but every visitor still needs the correct ticket and proof of age.

Can you visit the Colosseum with a pushchair?

Yes, you can manage the Colosseum with a pushchair. The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are a different story. The paths are steep, rocky and uneven, so I would take a baby carrier there. Even a good all-terrain pushchair will reach only part of the area.

How to get to the Colosseum

The Colosseum is at Piazza del Colosseo. Metro line B stops at Colosseo, and the new Metro C station Fori Imperiali/Colosseo is now open with an interchange to line B. Buses 51, 75, 81, 85, 87 and 118 and tram 3 also serve the area, although diversions are common in central Rome.

We booked an apartment nearby and walked, which was very convenient for an early visit. If you can stay within walking distance, you avoid depending on crowded morning transport and can arrive at your slot without stress.

The free official Colosseum audio guide

The official MyColosseum app is free and includes interactive audio guides in English and Italian. It also shows tickets and visitor routes. Download it before your visit and bring headphones; mobile reception and last-minute downloads are not something I would depend on at the entrance.

Does Roma Pass include the Colosseum?

Yes, but only the ordinary Colosseum route is included. The arena, underground and attic are not included. A Colosseum time reservation is compulsory even for Roma Pass holders, so check availability before buying a non-refundable pass.

The 72-hour Roma Pass includes the first two participating attractions, while the 48-hour version includes the first one. Reserve the Colosseum through the official Roma Pass ticket option, then buy the Roma Pass here if the calculation makes sense for your plans.

Why you should not skip the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Palatine Hill is, according to Roman legend, where Rome began and where the shepherd Faustulus found Romulus and Remus. Emperors including Augustus and Nero later built their residences here.

The Roman Forum contains remains from many periods, reaching back to the early history of Rome. It was the centre of public life, with temples, political buildings and speakers’ platforms. Allow at least two additional hours for the Forum and Palatine, more if you enjoy archaeology.

Where to eat near the Colosseum

Friends recommended Trattoria Luzzi to us. If it is full, there are plenty of inexpensive places in the surrounding streets. I would walk a little away from the square itself before choosing.
